Kampala. The Uganda Episcopal Conference will host 400 religious delegates at the Golden Jubilee festivities of Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) from July 19 to 29.
Bishop Joseph Antony Zziwa, the Kiyinda-Mityana Diocese, also the chairperson of the Uganda Episcopal Conference, said the delegates will come from Africa, Madagascar, Europe, and America.
“The delegates include cardinals, archbishops, bishops, priests, religious men and women, representatives of various partners and selected institutions,” Bishop Zziwa said at the Catholic Secretariat in Nsambya, Kampala, yesterday.

SECAM is a continental structure, bringing together Catholic bishops from Africa and Madagascar mainly to promote communion, collaboration and joint action in evangelism, human development, ecumenism and interreligious dialogue, among other things.
Uganda was chosen to hold SECAM, which takes place every three years, during a meeting in Angola in 2016.
The celebrations will run under the theme “Church-Family of God in Africa, celebrate your jubilee! Proclaim Jesus Christ your saviour.”
SECAM was born in Uganda 50 years ago and Bishop Zziwa said it has made many achievements.

Fifty years ago, he said, there were less than 10 dioceses in Uganda, which have increased to 19, the number of bishops has grown from less than 15, to 30, and the Church has 2,000 priests compared to 400 then.
Bishop Zziwa announced that President Museveni had delivered his earlier promise of buying vestments and robes for African bishops who are scheduled to attend the SECAM symposium in Kampala.
Msgr John Baptist Kauta heads the organising committee of the conference. President Museveni is expected to open the conference.
