Undress before land grabbers- Minister advises

Minister of State for Lands, Ms Aidah Nantaba

KAYUNGA.

The Minister of State for Lands, Ms Aidah Nantaba, has advised residents of Kayunga District, who are being evicted from their land to undress before land grabbers as a tactic to scare them away.

Ms Nantaba, who is also the Kayunga District Woman MP, said on Friday during a land consultative meeting held in Nkonkonjeru Trading Centre, Kitimbwa Sub-county, that the district was dogged with land evictions.
She said residents should emulate residents of Amuru and Soroti districts who undressed to assert their land rights.

Ms Nantaba was referring to the April incident when elderly women from Amuru District stripped before Lands minister Daudi Migereko and his Interior ministry counterpart Gen Aronda Nyakairima, when they had visited the district to settle a border dispute between Adjumani and Amuru districts. A similar stunt was enacted by women in Arapai in Soroti District, claiming the proposed Soroti university project was encroaching on their land.

Blaming Generals
Ms Nantaba accused UPDF generals she did not name of being behind land evictions in the district. Ms Nantaba said she was powerless to fight the land grabbers because those involved wield a lot of power in government.

“You should emulate Amuru residents by undressing whenever you see a General who wants to grab your land. When the general and minister were confronted by nude women they took off and returned with the ammunitions they had carried with them,” she said.

When contacted, the police spokesperson, Mr Fred Enanga, said: “I don’t know under which context she was saying that. But if it’s true, we can have her record a statement. Exposing nudity is an offence. It’s an act of indecency and it carries sanctions,” Mr Enanga said.
