Bamugemereire’s ways may be wanting, but she has a point

Equally baffling is the government’s apparent inaction or outright indifference sometimes in the face of such inhuman acts against citizens. FILE PHOTO

What you need to know:

  • Overtime time, we have witnessed many laws being amended, some of which of little or no benefit at all to the common man. With the outcries from all corners of the country, the land issue should evidently now be a matter of national concern.
  • Therefore, why doesn’t the government or Members of Parliament bring amendment to this abhorrent law, which causes the masses to suffer like they are foreigners in their own country?

I write in response to the article that appeared in this newspaper of November 5 titled ‘You are wrong on courts, ULS tells Bamugemereire0. This article is one of the many attacks that have been targeted at Justice Bamugemereire following her open criticism of the Judiciary.

Common to all these attacks, none disputes what she said, but they all condemn her for the manner and method she employs. In Uganda’s political lingua, she used the wrong forum. Which is all surprising for the ‘learned friends’ to disregard the substance and go for the form.

All said, what Justice Bamugemereire really says is not a secret. It is public knowledge. There is no single day that passes without media reports of how masses have been evicted from the land they have lived on for ages.

In all these evictions, those who evict residents are carrying court orders and claim they are doing it ‘legally’. Quite often, it is reported that it is government security agents who actually oversee these evictions.
We often heard it said that the law is there to protect the weak and vulnerable. Then what law is that which reinforces the ‘strong’ to oppress the weak?

Equally baffling is the government’s apparent inaction or outright indifference sometimes in the face of such inhuman acts against citizens. At best, what we hear are half-hearted threats made against the culprit and promises of the law to take its course leaving him/her go scot-free.

During elections, we are meant to know that the cardinal role of any government in power is to protect its citizens and their property. Then why this apparent inaction?

Overtime time, we have witnessed many laws being amended, some of which of little or no benefit at all to the common man. With the outcries from all corners of the country, the land issue should evidently now be a matter of national concern.

Justice Bamugemereire has a point and let us not trivialise it.
