Kampala. KCCA took advantage of Vipers’ continental excursions to open up a three point advantage at the top of the StarTimes Uganda Premier League (SUPL) over the weekend.
They did so after a hard fought 1-0 away victory at the Prisons ground against a Maroons team they also failed to defeat last season.
Jackson Nunda’s goal on 31 minutes proved the difference with the midfielder calmly finishing past goalkeeper Emmanuel Akol after disposessing Ronald Orombi.
But they were made to fight for the result with goalkeeper Charles Lukwago forced into two late saves to keep out Seif Batte.
“Maroons is not an easy team. Teams that use the ball are usually the ones that pose questions to us. In the end the result was more important. But the performance was average,” KCCA manager acknowledged afterwards. The result moved them to 21 points after nine games, three ahead of Vipers who were joined by Bright Stars on 18 points courtesy of a 3-0 away win over basement side Paidha Black Angels.
The result included a goal for the burly Brian Kayanja, the striker’s fourth of the campaign.
At Wankulukuku, Onduparaka then made it a perfect Saturday for away teams with a 2-0 win over Express at the Betway Muteesa II Stadium.
The impressive Ezra Bida stabbed home the opening goal seven minutes into the second half after a mistake from Express goalkeeper Mathias Muwanga. It was then followed by a goal-of-the-season contender from Gadafi ‘Gadinho’ Anguzu who curled home a wonderful strike from outside the box.
“It was a game of two halves. We played on the front foot at the start of the second half and it paid off,” Onduparaka coach Simeon Masaba noted.
