Kenya, Uganda to clash in Cecafa U-15 Cup final

  • Burundi’s coach Gustave Niyonkuru said his boys completely failed to match the Ugandan team. “It was a very bad game for us,” said a disappointed Niyonkuru.

A 10-man Kenyan team defeated Rwanda 4-2 on penalties after the game had ended 1-1 in the first semifinal played at the Asmara National Stadium whereas Uganda over powered Burundi 6-0 in the second semifinal match yesterday.

In the earlier match Kevin Wangaya Injehu gave Kenya the lead after 46 minutes with a clever tap-in from a Harel Gil cross. But the Rwanda team fought back strongly to level through Sultan Bobo Sibomana on 64 minutes with a well taken long free kick.

With two minutes to full time Kenyan defender Umar Yasin Rajab was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Kenya had Ibrahim Mone Mwaro, Robby Kahindi Mangi, Joseph Munala Odera, Kevin Wangaya Injehu converting their penalties, while skipper James Murage Gachango had his saved. Tanzania’s Eric Irahamye, Sultan Bobo Sibomana also converted, while Serieux Mbonyamahoro and David Niyo had their penalties saved.

“I am so happy my boys played their hearts out against a strong side and won. We created so many chances but failed to take them and this calls for improvement ahead of the final,” said Kenya’s coach Sagar Lakhani.

In the second semi final Uganda took a 4-0 lead at half time with Devis Ogwal, Abasi Kyeyune, Travis Mutyaba and skipper Vincent Mulema scoring. In the second half Jean Darcy Irakoze missed the target by inches for Burundi after 50 minutes. But substitue Godfrey Ssekibengo made it 5-0 for Uganda before Mutyaba got his second of the day.
