KAMPALA- Mbarara City protagonist Paul Mucureezi has made an audacious declaration that his team, placed third in the StarTimes Uganda premier League with 15 matches to go, can match pound for pound with Vipers and KCCA for the ultimate prize.

Alongside Hillary Mukundande, Pistis Barenge, Swalik Ssegujja, Ivan Eyam, Makueth Wol and Jude Ssemugabi, the former KCCA has dragged an unfancied Mbarara City side to third, three points behind second placed Vipers. His equaliser against Vipers at St Mary’s Stadium in Kitende on Sunday in the 1-1 draw was another of his top drawer performances against big sides like KCCA, SC Villa and Express this season. “Our target was to be number one.

But we came third (in the first round) which is not also bad position.
“But still we are aiming at winning the title,” Mucureezi, who is enjoying his rebirth after the KCCA exit told Daily Monitor.

He faces KCCA that jettisoned him last season but he says he holds no grudge, just like he did in the earlier 0-0 draw at Lugogo.
“It is not about Mucureezi and KCCA but about us showing the nation that we can lift the title because we can,” he added.

To him, the home advantage will play a big deal when facing KCCA that is missing suspended manager Mike Mutebi.

“KCCA come into this match on the back of losing two games in two different competitions so they will come out as wounded lions. We are ready for them,” added the player.

Mucureezi spent four trophy-laden years at Lugogo before joining the Ankole Lions, a move many viewed as moving south but their rise to the top three has vindicated his shift.

With a high scoring victory today, Livingstone Mbabazi’s side can leapfrog Vipers and cut KCCA’s lead to five points.
