Kampala. Mbarara City’s rise to third position on the StarTimes Uganda Premier League log owes much to a stellar home record that saw them complete the first round with seven wins and a draw.
That record remained intact yesterday as the Ankole Lions who returned to Kakyeka Stadium in November, held league leaders KCCA to a goalless draw yesterday.
The result allowed both teams who were playing their opening second round game maintain their positions on the 16-team log with KCCA top of the 16-team log with 37 points, six more than Vipers. Mbarara are meanwhile third, eight points behind KCCA and assistant coach Baker Kasule felt they could have earned much more from the game.
“We are somehow disappointed but we can go with that result. We had to kill off the game in the last minutes. Makueth against the goalkeeper then he squandered that golden chance against a big team like this,” Kasule said after the game.
With both teams struggling to create clear-cut opportunities on the bumpy Kakyeka surface, the game sprung to life in the closing stages with Wol Makueth miscontrolling the ball when faced with KCCA goalkeeper Charles Lukwago.
The last 10 minutes also featured two chances that fell to KCCA’s Peter Magambo with the defender missing the target from inside the six-yard box from well worked out corner-kicks.
“We gave our best although the conditions were not as favourable as at our ground. Mbarara is really strong and third on the table. Had we converted our chances mainly from set pieces but we lacked concentration,” KCCA assistant manager Morley Byekwaso said.
The game was the first of the four he is expected to take charge with manager Mike Mutebi serving a four-match suspension.
In Njeru, Farouk Banga’s lone strike helped Bul move into fourth position with a 1-0 win over struggling Maroons.
