Nanyonga draws inspiration from 2015 World Cup edition

Goal Attacker Rachael Nanyonga says the 2015 Netball World Cup discredited the notion that netball is ‘an unserious sport in Uganda’ thus players being encouraged to work even harder.
Nanyonga told this paper that it is the vigour and inspiration from the past World Cup that will drive the team to perform better in this year’s edition come July 12-21 in Liverpool, England.
The NIC goal attacker has worked tirelessly with team captain Peace Proscovia in the shooting department to deliver overwhelming victories for Uganda in various competitions.
“Qualifying for 2015 World Cup was not easy, we passed through many hardships and this just made us stronger. The World Cup was a huge platform for our sport,” Nanyonga told this paper.
After the World Cup, the She Cranes registered back to back victories in African Netball Championships in 2017 and 2018 thereby climbing to the seventh position in world ranking.
They also took part in 2018 Commonwealth Games where they emerged eighth. “The Commonwealth Games in Australia as well as the three match test series against England last year gave us a great platform to test ourselves against the best in the UK,” Nanyonga said. “We’ve got a tough pool, there’s no doubt but there are games we can take - and we’ll be going out to show what we’re made of,” she added.
The She Cranes pooled in group D of the World Cup with England, Scotland and Samoa will be heading for their third world event after the 1979 and 2015 editions in Trinidad and Tobago and Australia.
