Enjoy more than pub grub

Kabira Country Club has finally completed their new menu engineering with the introduction of the recently introduced The Pub Bar & Restaurant. Traditionally, the kind of food served in these places was known as “Pub grub” and over time expanded to include so called British food such as steak and ale pie, shepherd’s pie, fish and chips, the English bangers and mash (sausages and mashed potatoes), Sunday roast, and pastries. As might be expected, there are also dishes such as burgers, and chicken.

I would have loved to see the Ploughman’s lunch which is an English cold meal that is based around bread, cheese, onions and is usually accompanied by butter and pickles. One can also include other items such as ham, a leafy salad, boiled eggs and add some fruits such as an apple or pears. The menu offers great flexibility and simplicity.
Appetisers
For starters, I could not resist their pan fried fish cakes with spinach, chives and cream. Fish cakes make wonderful appetisers and one seldom encounters them in Kampala. Simple to make and filling. Here one can have them as main course since they are generously served with chips and they are well done.
Starter
While still on the subject of starters, I was intrigued to see chicken rumali roll which is the Indian version of Uganda’s fabled rolex; the difference here being the filling of boneless chicken with spices and can be eaten with or without chilies.

For rolex lovers, this is a must have. Fellow trencherman was bowled by this dish and I too tasted it and wholeheartedly agreeing that it was a winner. Over to the soups and salads, there is nothing to beat a homemade soup which in this case happens to have been cream of mushroom.
This is one soup that is fully flavoured and easy to make within minutes and having tried it you will never buy canned soup [again]!
Verdict
For the mains, I would recommend the pan seared chicken breast with garlic, fresh thyme and cream sauce and they also do decent steaks. Not surprisingly, they also have the curry corner that has the ever popular chicken tikka masala and the legendary mutton rogan josh. We like the service, food and ambiance and would recommend the place any day.
