Recaping the Oscars

Last Sunday, Hollywood loyalty came together to honour its finest in a colourful and glamorous show. The latest fashion designs were paraded for all to see while some of the most talented and beautiful people in the world were all packed in one room. Seth Macfarlane, this year’s host, did a rather commendable job.

Well, the night was far from the fun filled affair most people no longer expect, with the production remaining conservative in its own right and sticking to its same old entertainment modules of the last century.

In this regard only the Catholic Church beats the film academy in terms of sticking to tradition. Personally, I can only take in some many show dance tunes from another age before I start to get a headache. I mean for God’s sake, some music and entertainers from this decade would go a long way in spicing up the festivities.

Deserving winners
On the business side of things most people would agree that justice was done with no real shockers in most fronts. Christopher waltz saw off competition from Tommy lee Jones to take home his second Oscar for best supporting actor. His role in Django unchained of dentist turned bounty hunter was nothing short of sensational.

Anne Hathaway is what you could now call Oscar loyalty. I have to think far and back to remember the last time she was not on the short list for best something. The best actress from last year managed to add to her ever growing collection of accolades with a win in the best supporting actress category. Jennifer Lawrence best known for her role as Katniss Everdeen in Hunger Games surprised most people when she tipped Jessica Chastain to claim prize of best actress who personally I thought had the edge over the eventual winner with her exceptional performance in Zero dark thirty.

Messi of the Oscars
Daniel Day Lewis was confirmed as the Messi of the Oscars as he became the first male actor to bag three honours. There were really no surprises there as his portrayal of Abraham Lincoln in the Spielberg directed movie about the president was nothing short of hypnotic.

Quentin Tarentino was also on the receiving end for his best original screen play for his twisted and unique outlook on slavery with Django unchained. I was surprised when Brave came up ahead of Wreck it ralph in best animation category as I thought the latter was much better in terms of humour and story line.

Adele on the other hand can’t seem to stop winning awards. She could not hold back the tears after winning the award for best original song, making it a very fruitful two years for the talented British songstress. Life of pi as expected won all the awards concerned with the technical aspects of movie making as it had no competition in that regard. But the biggest winner of the day was the favourite Argo which won best picture much to the delight of leading man and director Ben Affleck.
