Save space with transformation furniture

Rather than buying a bed and sofas and congested, a multifunctional couch can server both purposes.

What you need to know:

One of the basics of excelling in a world of fashion design is accepting to adapt to change. For a person with a small interior space, using multi-functional furniture is a good way to keep organised. But this is just one way of using transformation furniture as Betty Ndagire explores.

Oscar Okello, a carpenter at Wood Art Carpentry Workshop in Kasubi, a Kampala suburb, says highly functional multipurpose furniture is a modern design that home owners need to possess. This is especially common among people with limited space.

Why transformation furniture
“Many apartment dwellers who visit my workshop always tell me they do not have the luxury of separate rooms in their homes so each piece of furniture needs to serve multiple uses,” Okello explains.
Therefore, carpenters have invented ways to create unique furniture pieces that serve multiple uses.
Okello says furniture such as lightweight objects that are easy to move facilities, furniture that has multiple functions, and storage that is a quick to assemble and disassemble are on demand. This is because they make it great to do more with less and will also appeal to the fashion fanatics.

According to Peace Kobusinge, an interior designer at Patterned Interior in Wakiso, the best way to make your home stylish and spacious is by purchasing transformation furniture. “One can buy a convertible sofa bed, which can be used as a couch in your living room during the day and then a bed at night. The convertible sofa-beds are easy to use as you just need to put cushions on the couch and replace them with pillows at night.”

Types of sofas
Kobusinge says the couches come in different types, such as sleeper sofas, folding beds and transforming couches.
They are in a variety of material which include: smooth, opulent leather based sleeper sofa, suede, microfibre, synthetic and natural fabric.
She says there are also multipurpose sofas with bookshelves below them.
Kobusinge says the, bedroom, as well being a centre of attraction in any house, deserves more space to allow free roaming of the occupant.

Kobusinge says folding beds will do just perfect since they can be put away when not in use. The modern day version of transformation beds is so much cooler. It magically flips out to a queen size contemporary bed with headboard.
Kobusingye says such beds can also be used to keep children tucked safely. Their side rails and anchor straps can position the bed rail firmly against the mattress.
Kobusinge further explains that you may ask a carpenter to make you a shoe cabinet at the entry of you corridor, and unknowingly, this may become a favorite piece of furniture in the house. It can store all your family’s shoes and space may be created for a drop zone on top for keys and a drawer for miscellaneous items.

Kitchen convertible built-ins
For the kitchen, Kobusinge advises using less furniture and more convertible built-ins. “Unrestricted standing furniture takes up a lot of space. If your home is small, take a thin space and add a decorative turn post for looks with a pull out for spice storage.
She adds that you can tuck in a built-in piece to give you more room in the home.

For example, buy kitchen transformative cabinets that come fitted with fridges, microwaves, sinks, cupboards and cookers, these keep everything in one place.

The living room as a dinning room
Another way to save space is by using the living room as a dining. Use convertible wooded tables as ironing boards. These can be folded and stashed away in the cabins after use.
