What you need to know:

  • FEASTING. I went out for a Christmas lunch and I could not miss to share my experience, writes Freddie Kakembo.

Last festive season, it was about feasting. Delicious dishes made the menu at Munyonyo that I could not help but share my experience.
A blind man could see the whole pig somersaulting to enable the smouldering fire to brown the shimmering: ears, legs, ribs, backside and the pointed head. In a queue being served, jaws of diners were audibly gnashing as tongues went in riot.
“Pork has been elevated to another level!” commented John Kirunda.
“Won’t that pig’s head bite us?” wondered a child.
In general, pork like in George Orwell’s Animal Farm (Joseph Stalin) is currently using: hot pepper, avocado, salads, fruits and Ugali (maize bread) to intimidate other cuisines and consolidate its preference on the Uganda table.
And to summarise the analogy, this Christmas the bigenderako (accompaniments) were numerous; one could exhaust the fingers counting on both palms. They comprised of: steamed cassava, fruit salad, hot pepper, all tribes of wines, spirits, bread, chips, ice creams and soft drinks.
“What do you love to eat?” asks an attendant beaming with smile. “Ribs, loin or you name it…” asked the smiling attendant.

Nile Perch fete
As a contender to cater for a vegetarian or an Italian worth his name, was a counterpart of, monstrous Nile Perches (fish) weighing more than 50kg each. I wondered whether the seven fish in the stalls, represent the seven holy sacraments of the Catholic Church, as they engaged dinners in a staring contest. Some dug huge meat from: head, mid body or tail.
In rapid succession was taste buds irritating turkey lazily resting by: jacketed potatoes, Shepherd’s Pie, steamed matooke and thick groundnut and fresh beans stew.
Swish sounds of diners sucking soup from its pig bones could be heard competing with live music sizzling from big speakers as Esom live Band strangulated their vocal chords to perfect songs by Elly Wamala, Don Williams, Lionel Richie, Jimmy Katumba and Aretha Franklin.
Friends, family and lovers could also be seen chopping off portions off roast turkey that left their shirt buttons open to allow fresh air and an eating engagement. These curried competitors, ox tail inclusive were sent down with curried soups, steamed bananas, pilau, white rice and deep fried potatoes.

Hive of activity
Later in the day Speke Resort Munyonyo was evidence Uganda is a melting pot of; African, Arabs, Asians, Britons and Americans cultures.
Meanwhile social media fanatics could be seen clapping their eyes on Pope Francis kissing a figure of Jesus Christ in the Vatican. It did not matter whether they were Christians or not. The children sprinkled the swimming pool like white ants in season as they played ball, ate Indian sweets and munched nyama choma like there was no tomorrow.
