The girl in P5 says she does not want her mother to leave prison because she will burn her again.

Ngora- A nine-year old girl from Ajesa village, Kapir Sub-county, Ngora District who was burnt by her mother for allegedly stealing a piece of fish from a cooking pot has pleaded with the police not to release her parent.

The girl, in P5, who is an orphan, accuses her mother of mistreating her and failing to provide for her and her siblings since the death of their father three years ago.

The girl said her mother leaves them at home without food and goes to drink.
She said on the fateful day her mother returned at 9pm from her drinking spree and started beating her on accusations that she had stolen a piece of fish.

“It is my younger brother who ate the fish, it wasn’t me. Please, do not let my mother out (of detention) because she will come and burn me again. I don’t like her, I want her to stay with my aunt,” the girl pleaded at Ngora Police Station.
The mother of five was arrested after the girl escaped to her aunt, who reported the matter to police.

Ms Florence Adeke, a child and family protection officer at Ngora Central Police Station, said the mother would be prosecuted for child abuse.
“The file has already been sent to the Resident Prosecutor for perusal and will advise on how to proceed with the case,” she said.
