Govt asks S6 leavers to embrace technical studies

As thousands of students, who excelled in the 2022 Uganda Advanced Certificate of Advanced Education (UACE) await to join various universities, hope is not lost for those who may not access university education due to the cost or failure to raise the required entry points.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Sports, Ms Ketty Lamaro, told this publication yesterday that there are various Technical Vocational Education Training (TVET) Institutions spread across the country that such students can take advantage of.
“There are many options in the TVET institution. Government is really trying to market TVET and not as an alternative for those who have not performed well, but as a critical option,” Ms Lamaro said.

Statistics at the TVET Directorate of the Ministry of Education and Sports indicates there are more than 140 government and 400 private TVET institutions.
Ms Lamaro appealed to learners to embrace technical vocation education, saying the skills that they will acquire can easily get them into gainful employment in addition to employing other jobless youth.
She noted there are various courses that can be undertaken by Primary Seven leavers, O-Level and A-Level leavers, and even school dropouts who do not have any qualifications.
“There are endless options under the skilling sector. We just need to popularise it as a critical option, “she said.

Ms Elizabeth Kateme, the assistant commissioner at the Department of TVET, said entry requirements are not so stringent.
“In some of the courses, we don’t put a lot of emphasis on their previous performance because a learner may be poor at answering examination questions when they are good at vocational skills,” Ms Kateme said.
She noted that Primate Seven graduates study from community polytechnics while Senior Four leavers study from technical institutions where both the former and the latter are awarded a national certificate in different disciplines.

She added that Senior Six leavers pursuing diploma courses study from various technical colleges spread across the country.
Some of the institutions offering TVET courses at diploma level include Uganda Colleges of Commerce (UCC), Uganda Technical Colleges, Uganda Cooperative Colleges, and Fisheries Training Colleges, among others.
She also asked parents to change their perception towards technical training and stop viewing it as a last option for failures saying, TVET is the way to go.
She, however, noted that the government and its partners are working tirelessly to increase enrollment and attract candidates to pursue such courses.
