Man dies retrieving Shs60,000, driving permit from latrine

A man identified as Wilson Byamukama on Wednesday died in a pit latrine belonging to a coffee factory in Kigaba 2, Kasaana subcounty, Sheema district as he attempted to retrieve money, a driving permit, and national identity card.
Mr Martial Tumusiime told Daily Monitor on Thursday, that Mr Byamukama, 43, a resident of Nyamambo village, Kasaana sub-county, Sheema district was promised a reward of Shs30,000 by an unidentified colleague who had lost his bag containing a driving permit, National Identity card and money worth Shs60,000. The bag fell into a latrine pit of about 60ft depth.
"The deceased was promised a reward of Shs30, 000 after getting the bag. He got a rope and took up the task of retrieving the bag, but it was unfortunate that he couldn't come back. The locals waited for him to get out in vain, “Mr Tumusiime said.
The on looking locals reported the matter to the fire department of police but Byamukama's life couldn't be saved as the police fire truck arrived at the scene late according to Mr Tumusiime
He added: "He failed to get out of the latrine and died there. The locals called police for help but unfortunately, the police fire truck reached late and was unable to rescue the situation because it left Bushenyi at 5pm,"
After failing to arrest the situation, police withdrew from the scene and went back the following Friday morning to retrieve the body which was taken to Kitagata hospital mortuary.
Police attributed Mr. Byamukama's death to the alarming poverty in communities which has left people hopeless to an extent of risking their lives for little money.
