MUBS asks government to prioritise career guidance

KAMPALA. Makerere University Business School (Mubs), has asked government to streamline career guidance at all levels of education in the country because students today are joining university without career choice.
In an interview yesterday, Mubs deputy principal Prof Moses Muhwezi, said after realising that there is a gap in career guidance among students who apply to join the university, Mubs decided to engage career guidance teachers and students in secondary schools in seminars and workshops prior to admission to the university so as to show them the courses offered at the university. This is aimed at enabling students to apply for courses based on their interests and abilities.
“Some of the students from primary school to university are still young. They do not know what is happening out there and are not sure of what to do. This is why career guidance is important,” he said.
He said proper career guidance will guide their future based on their interests and abilities.
“All our students undergo career guidance before they join. We go to secondary schools and invite them here for workshops and seminars,” Prof Muhwezi said.
He added that companies that have sponsored this year’s fair should work with universities and government to streamline the training so that they can get the right kind of employees. On Monday, NSSF and Monitor Publications launched the 2017 annual universities career fair at Makerere University and on Wednesday, the fair moved to Makerere University Business School where it ended yesterday. The four- day event took two days in each university.
