Musician Yawe charged with holding unlawful assembly

Democratic Party’s Eddie Yawe has been charged with three counts relating to unlawful assembly. Mr Yawe was arrested on Thursday near Uganda House in Kampala during the foiled launch of ‘Free Uganda Now’ demonstration.

Mr Yawe, a local musician and former Kampala Central parliamentary aspirant, appeared before Buganda Road Court Grade One Magistrate Grace Balintuma and denied the charges.

He was released on non-cash bail of Shs10 million and each of his three sureties was also bonded on the same terms.

The sureties included Mr Julius Walakira, Ms Catherine Namuleme and Bulene Malisa. The the Free Uganda Now rally was scheduled to take place at Nsambya playground in Kampala.

According to prosecution, Mr Yawe allegedly committed the offences in April when police sprayed DP president Norbert Mao and UPC’s Olara Otunu with pink-coloured water in Kampala as they marched from Uganda House to the Constitution square to hold a rally.

According to the charge sheet, the suspect allegedly held unlawfully rally which police say breached the peace of his neighbours. He is also alleged to have incited the public around Kampala Road and damaged a vehicle belonging to Mr Abu Bakar Senyonjo on April 21.
Mr Yawe is expected back in court on June 24 when the hearing of his case will commence.
