NCHRD-U gets substantive Executive Director

KAMPALA.

The National Coalition of Human Rights Defenders Uganda (NCHRD-U), an umbrella organization of individuals and organisations working to protect human rights has appointed Mr Robert Kirenga as its Executive Director.
Mr Kirenga who has previously worked for Human Rights Centre at the level of director started work on August 15.
According to a stamen from the coalition, Mr Kirenga will work closely with the Chairperson Board of Directors-Mr. Mohammed Ndifuna and the existing staff for a transition period.
“Robert Kirenga is a human rights practitioner with 17 years’ work experience acquired at both national (Uganda Human Rights Commission, The Human Rights Centre Uganda in Kampala, Uganda) and international level (UNDP-Zimbabwe country Office, Danish Institute for Human Rights-Zimbabwe Human Rights Project, Progressio-Somaliland Project-Hargeisa, Somaliland, Human Rights training and Institutional Development Consultancy),” said the statement.
According to the statement, Mr Kirenga’s expertise includes human rights education and institutional development, democratic governance, rule of law, business and human rights, and international human rights law.
Kirenga is also has extensive experience in developing the capacities of various national partners in advocating for the respect and promotion of human rights.
“National Coalition of Human Rights Defenders Uganda (NCHRD-U) is very pleased and excited to announce the appointment of Robert Kirenga as its new Executive Director,” the statement noted.

Kirenga holds a degree in Political Science and Public Administration from Makerere University, Uganda, a Masters in the theory and practice of Human Rights from the University of Oslo in Norway, a Postgraduate Diploma in International Law and Organisation Development from the Institute of Social Studies at The Hague, Netherlands, and a Diploma in Law from the Law Development Centre, Makerere.
Kirenga is fluent in Swahili and English and has good working knowledge of Luganda and the Runyakitara languages.

"He is a passionate fitness practitioner and a father of three. The whole staff and the Executive Board very much look forward to working with Kirenga," said the statement.

Established in 2013, the coalition has not had an Executive Director before and his duties were being performed by a national coordinator under the supervision of the chairman board of directors.
