WAKISO. Two pupils have been confirmed dead while three others and a teacher are hospitalised at Mengo and Mulago hospitals in Kampala after a hit-and-run car rolled over them in Wakiso district on Wednesday morning.

The accident was caused through “reckless driving”, Nansana Division Police Commander, Bernard Katwaalo says.

“[One] child died on the spot and another on arrival at Mengo Hospital where two other children and their teacher, Fiona Ainomugisha are admitted,” he says.

Preliminary investigations show that a Toyota Super Custom van belonging to Precious Primary School, located in Katooke, Nansana, in Wakiso was dropping off school children when it rammed into other pupils and their teacher. They were standing by the roadside as they waited to cross the road to Little Diamond Primary School.

“The van never stopped after the accident only to continue at high speed and knock another passenger vehicle, a Toyota Hiace, in Nansana,” says the DPC.

The child who died on the spot has been identified as Robert Ssendagire. We were unable to immediately ascertain particulars of the other victims.

Police have opened inquiries into the accidents and asked the public to volunteer information that can help investigators arrest the errant driver.
