Two UPDF soldiers and a boda boda cyclist have been arrested by the police Rapid Response Unit (RRU) personnel in connection with armed robbery at a supermarket in Jinja Town.

The robbery took place between 8pm and 9.30pm at Pramukh Supermarket on Lubas Road on Tuesday night. Police said the robbers, who wore civilian clothes, pretended to be customers before they put the supermarket staff at gunpoint and demanded cash.

“They placed the workers at gunpoint and demanded money. In the process one of the workers grabbed the gunman but he was shot in the hand,” the South-eastern Regional Police Commander, Mr Ben Mubangizi, said.

Fruitful search
By the time police were informed, the robbers had already taken off with Shs3 million. They were reportedly riding on a motorcycle.

But a team led by Jinja DPC Jonathan Musingunzi managed to trace the suspects and arrested them at Walukuba swamp. The soldiers, who are at the rank of a Corporal and Sergeant, are stationed at Magamaga Barracks in Mayuge.

The RPC on Wednesday said the police and RRU, with the help of the civilians, recovered a gun and a motorcycle, which were allegedly used in the robbery, in the swamp at Walukuba in the outskirts of Jinja Town.

The suspects, who were by yesterday still detained at Nalufenya Police Station in Jinja as investigations into the matter continue, will be transferred to the military court for prosecution, Mr Samson Lubega, the South-Eastern Regional Police spokesman, said.
