What you need to know:

  • All neighbours of the deceased suspect and local council officials did not know his particulars though they claim he had stayed in that room for more than a year.
  • Mr Abdul Ssemanda, the immediate neighbour of the deceased claimed that he was at one time suspected to be involved in suspicious activities as his room remained closed during day and only opened it later in the night.

Boda Boda riders operating in Luweero Town Council have lynched and burnt the body of unidentified man whom they suspected to be part of the gang that has been terrorising motorcyclists in the district.

Luweero District Police Commander, Mr Ahamed Musakana, confirmed the lynching of a suspect by the mob who later set ablaze his remains.  The mob had even tried to follow up and lynch another suspect who is currently in police custody, but police dispersed them.

“The police condemn mob actions against any suspect. We advise residents to always engage the police without resorting to mob action. We have in custody two suspects in connection to the motorcycle theft and injuring of a Boda-Boda cyclist who is now receiving treatment at Bishop Asili Hospital in Luweero Town,” Mr Musakana said on Friday.

Police also recovered two motorcycles ( Reg No. UDG 567Q- Honda and Reg No. UEA 594L Bajaj) from the rented premises of the deceased suspect including a bunch of keys among other items.

All neighbours of the deceased suspect and local council officials did not know his particulars though they claim he had stayed in that room for more than a year.

Mr Abdul Ssemanda, the immediate neighbour of the deceased claimed that he was at one time suspected to be involved in suspicious activities as his room remained closed during day and only opened it later in the night.

“Many people in the neighbourhood did not know the person who resided in that single room. What failed our plans to question him about what he does for a living was that we did not have any evidence of what we suspected him to be involved in. We thought that he was probably working at a certain factory, but did not have time to spend at his home during day,” he said.

“When we saw him riding a motorcycle that had disappeared from one of our own, he decided to run way. This raised suspicion and the cyclists chased him. The mob did not allow him to explain where he got the motorcycle from,” Mr Ssemanda added.

Mr Alex Kabango, a boda-boda cyclist and an eyewitness said that the other three suspects managed to escape the wrath of the mob.
