UPDF imposter arrested for extorting money from public

Police in Soroti District are holding a 23-year-old man who allegedly masqueraded as a Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) officer and obtained money from some people seeking to be recruited as Local Defence Unit (LDU) personnel.
Daniel Kedi, a resident of Abarilela in Amuria District is alleged to have swindled unspecified amount of money from some individuals on assurance that they would be recruited in the LDU.
The police spokesperson for east Kyoga region, Mr Michael Odongo said the Kedi was arrested at Executive guest house in Soroti town.
He added that the suspect was found with forged UPDF documents and application forms which he allegedly used to obtain money from the unsuspecting people.

Among those who fell of Kedi’s alleged scheme are Ivan Ojur 40, a resident of Amen “A” village, Soroti Sub County Soroti district and one Geoffrey Eyengu. The two are among several people who allegedly committed payment of shs 35,000 each a head of the LDU recruitment.

Mr Odongo said the suspect will be arraigned in court in charged accordingly.

The recruitment of LDU personnel who will be deployed in Kampala and nearby towns started on September 26 and was supposed to end on October 1, 2018.
Ministry of Defence and Army spokesman, Brig Richard Karemire recently said that the LDUs will support police and other regular forces to reinforce security in Kampala metropolitan area that has experienced a spate of crime and murder of various people.

After the killing of former Buyende District Police Commander Muhammad Kirumira on September 8, 2018, President Museveni directed the deployment of 24,000 strong force of LDU personnel and “crime preventers” in the 1,000 or so villages that make up Kampala and Wakiso districts to end the killings and provide security to citizens.
