Shock gripped residents of Bukerewe village in Buwunga Sub County, Bugiri District when loose soil buried a woman alive in a stone quarry.
Mweidhuma Byobona 51 is said to have died on Sunday evening at Kirongo stone quarry where she was looking for stones for sale. Residents said as Byobona descended into the cave to retrieve stones, loose soil and rocks collapsed and buried her alive.
Mrs Hawa Namatovu said by the time they went to help her, she had already been covered up by soil.
“She was in the cave and a heap of soil and rocks which were hanging on top, collapsed and covered her,” Namatovu said.
Police was called from Bugiri to retrieve the body. The police spokesman for Busoga east region, James Mubi confirmed the incident saying that the deceased was alone by the time she was buried.
He warned those working in stone quarries to always be careful and avoid entering into caves which lack support.
Residents said more than 100 people earn a living from Kirongo stone quarry and the deceased had worked there for two years.
