What you need to know:

  • Bobi Wine will launch his campaign in Arua, a city where two years ago he survived the shooting by security forces in an election fracas that claimed the life of his driver. Government later charged him with treason on claims that he wanted to assassinate President Museveni who was also in Arua campaigning for an NRM parliamentary candidate.

National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, is set to launch his campaign in Arua City tomorrow, two days after he unveiled his manifesto in Mbarara City.
Bobi Wine says taking these major events away from his central region stronghold are meant to reach as many people as possible and also make a statement about his critics that have been labelling NUP a Kampala party.

“We launched our manifesto in Mbarara City and we had lots of support there; we are now going to Arua City and show our detractors that NUP is everywhere. We want to take everyone by storm because they have always dismissed us on various fronts for the past three years. For us we have rolled, catch us if you can,” he said by telephone last evening.

Although the Electoral Commission campaign programme released yesterday indicates that Bobi Wine is meant to start his campaign in Arua City, Pakwach and Nebbi districts today, the NUP leader said the commission delayed confirming the campaign programme and they will delay the start of their campaign by a day.

“We have been forced to push our launch of the campaigns to Tuesday (tomorrow) because we were informed late and we had to do some organisations,” Mr Joel Ssenyonyi, the NUP spokesperson, said yesterday.
“EC told us that some people had not sent their programmes for harmonisation and we insisted that let us roll because the other people might take forever to bring their programmes,” he added.

With only 63 days of the campaign in 146 districts countrywide, it means all presidential candidates will have to cover on average of two districts per day. Bobi Wine starting his campaign one day late means he will have to visit more districts per day if he is to cover the whole country by January 14.

On Saturday, Bobi Wine launched his manifesto in Mbarara City which he said was a successful event despite the fact that some of his supporters were arrested and their equipment confiscated by police and army.
“This shows that if police left us to do our things in peace, there would be no scene,” he said.
