KAMPALA. Innocent Kihika, the outgoing chairman of Entebbe Golf Club (EGC) is in a state of two minds. One part of his body still wants to be part of golf development at EGC, and Uganda as a whole.
But the other is equally happy to walk away, appreciate the good deeds done and take the back seat as an ordinary member. At least for now!
From serving as a house member in 2007, Kihika went through the ranks to secretary (2008-12) to his last mantle as chairman – a role he served for four years. The former Uganda Golf Union (UGU) secretary believes he has left the game in a ‘very good place’.
“After nine years of continuous service to this great club of Entebbe, the bells have finally tolled for my departure,” Kihika told Daily Monitor earlier this week in an exclusive interview after handing over the reins to former club secretary Dr Tumbweine Twinemanzi.
“I believe I used my positions of prestige to help the best golf club in Uganda make major positive strides. Together with the committees I worked with and under, we helped raise the membership numbers from 30 in 2007 to 350 today.
“We used to have one tournament - the JBG Gauff Open every year. No we have as many as eight highly-competitive events including the Marsh Chairman’s Cup, Captain’s Putter, Nkata Memorial Open, Castle Lite Entebbe Open and Entebbe Ladies Open among others. One has also got to look at our new magnificent club house and give us a pat on the back.”
But Kihika is just not about waxing lyrical about only achievements. He is quick to notify that his stay at the club has not just been about successes. “There are a couple of things I regret,” adds the man whose professional occupation is a Commissioner for Oaths.
“I am a stickler for detail and many people have mistaken my character for being someone who is arrogant. We (committee) made some good decisions that haven’t gone down with people.
“My final year started off with the excitement of the redevelopment of the golf course and club house but this was unfortunately temporarily halted by a court injunction that was obtained by some club members. There is a case in court now and I am not legally allowed to comment about it.”
As Twinemanzi ushers in his era, he will be eager to continue keeping golf out of Kampala by ensuring the sponsors keep interested in Entebbe’s activities with proper accountability like Kihika’s regime religiously tried to keep a clean slate.
