Fr Lokodo: I did not know Desire Luzinda before nudes

What you need to know:

Fr Simon Lokodo. The 56-year-old minister for Ethics and Integrity opened up to Esther Oluka about the reasons for his continuous fight against “immorality” in the country.

Of all the evils in this country, it is nude pictures and miniskirts that seem to bother you the most, why?
It is part of my job. I am not only up in arms against miniskirts and nude pictures but immorality in general. This includes prostitution and places where they exhibit indecent behaviour and dressing. By the way, have you personally been to such places where they dance naked?
No, I have not. How about you Fr Lokodo?
I do not go to such places either because people there behave like beasts of the forest. I strongly condemn such places of entertainment. What I normally do is send people to such places who eventually come and give me feedback. If we get anyone doing what is contrary to the law, we deal with them accordingly.
Did you know local artiste Desire Luzinda before her nude pictures leaked?
I had never heard or even personally met Desire until the time her nude pictures leaked.
When someone told me that her photos were obscene, I did not bother looking at them because I never wanted to get nausea. I reacted by telling police to arrest her after another person told me that the pictures were splashed in tabloids and various social media platforms.
I could not accept and tolerate such pictures circulating around and not do anything about it as Ethics minister. I cannot even imagine what goes on in the mind of any child who lands on such pictures.
What was the crime, taking the pictures or leaking them and whose fault was it?
The first person I condemned was Luzinda because she posed and let the man take the pictures. Morally, that was wrong. She should have had it at the back of her mind that anything was bound to happen as the pictures were in the man’s possession. But I am glad she finally came out and recorded a statement with police.
That was all I wanted her to do. To come out and tell us how the pictures leaked. And to the man who leaked the pictures, in case we find him, he will face the law as well.
What do you normally do during your free time?
I watch news, inspirational movies like the life of Jesus and football. I never watch anything obscene. My favourite football team is Arsenal.
And just recently, you and the police stormed Madinisa Zone in Makindye and arrested local upcoming artiste Jemimah Kansiime a.k.a Panadol Wabasajja.
Yes, we did that because she had shot a dirty and obscene music video. I almost watched it but when I saw the first part where she started removing her clothes, my God! I just stopped and informed police.
During her arrest, I could not help but notice the tattoos that were all over her body and she could only express herself in the local language, Luganda.
Do you still serve the Catholic Church as a priest?
When I joined politics, I still served the church for about two years but then left in order to concentrate on serving my ministerial position. I am an ordained priest in the Catholic Church. I have served in the priesthood for the last 30 years.

Do you have your own family?
I do not have a wife or children because I chose to take a priestly life where one of the conditions was to become celibate (not to marry). You will only find caretakers at my home.
Are there times you wish you had a family of your own?
Why do you want to know that? That would be spilling the beans. I do not share that kind of information with anybody. Just know that I’m celibate and have no intentions to marry.
How about a relationship, have you ever been in one?
No, I have never been in one probably because I joined the seminary when I was just 11 years old where we were taught not to lust over girls or women. Nowadays, whenever some of my friends see me talking to any woman, they joke about it but I tell them they are wasting time.
What kind of child were you while growing up?
I was such a jolly and humorous child. Also, I loved playing sports including basketball, volley ball and football.

What is your personal style?
I do not have a particular style. I wear something depending on what activity I am going to perform at the time.
For instance, if I am going to Parliament, I will wear a suit, if it is the gym, I will wear my work out clothes and if it is my garden, you will find me wearing gumboots.

About the maid

The disturbing video of the maid torturing the 18-month-old child, have you watched it?
(Pauses for a moment) Yes, I did. It was very painful to watch. How can someone do such a thing to an innocent child? Even if you have a grudge with the child’s parents, do not transfer the anger onto the baby. She did not deserve that inhuman treatment from the maid. That househelp deserves to be separated permanently from society.

This is just one of the many cases that happen in this country where maids torture children. What do you think should be done to fight such abuse?
Parents should endeavour to sensitise the maids they employ by telling them their expectations and if they fail to meet them, they should dismiss them.
While they are at it, parents should also have an eye open on what is happening in their homes. Be inquisitive whenever you see any kind of injury on your child’s body or whenever they are acting strange.

I would also like to take this time to request corporate organisations to construct day care centres at their respective workplaces where mothers can have the opportunity to breastfeed and monitor their babies. By doing this, many mothers would find no reason worrying about employing a maid.
