What you need to know:

Agile: Ruva Walter Joseph Warom is a dancer known to fans and learners as Uncle Walter. He learnt from different people and today runs vibrant dance classes. Edgar R. Batte spoke to him.

How would you describe yourself?
I am a dance artiste, which makes me a dancer, teacher and choreographer. I am the founder and artistic director of Warom The Company, which I abbreviate as WTC.

How long have you been dancing professionally?
I have been dancing professional since 2008. I run weekly dance classes, which have been codenamed ‘Uncle Walter Dance Classes’.

What kind of dance transpires in your classes?
I blend Ugandan traditional movement with fitness. I also teach African contemporary dance. I mentor different dance groups, crews and companies.

When and how did you become a dancer?
I started dancing at the age of six. I would dance at family and clan functions. At school, I got interested in traditional Ugandan dances. Later when my guardians could not raise my school fees, I joined karaoke dance groups. That was around 2006. I did this for two years then I heard of dance as one of the art forms at National Theatre. I decided to go there and learn from professional dancers. The theatre became my home, since 2008.

Is it true dancers have luck with women?
I do not think so, but a few have been lucky.

Have you had love tickle you as a result of dance?
Yes, but it did not last because she did not know my other side.

Are you in a relationship?
Yes, I am trying to settle down. She needs to earn my trust.

How would she earn your trust?
By knowing who I am, and knowing when it is work time. It means separating work from relations as well as understanding me, and my fans. Some of my fans are ladies so she should be aware that at some point, they will react a certain way when she is around. Of course, I also have to respect her back.

Who is the lucky girl?
I will not say the name now because anything can happen in this final round of the relationship. So, I will wait to confirm that she is the one.

What do you do to prove your love for her?
I give her enough time and respect. I also keep her away from my fans.

How does she reciprocate the love?
She likes surprising me, which I am not a fan of, but sometimes I like it.

What is the biggest surprise she has had for you?
Buying me a ticket to Zanzibar for my birthday surprise.

My background
I was born in Old Kampala, just next to Old Kampala Mosque. I am an Alur, from Pakwach. Since we are from West Nile, we have a lot of Congolese influence, I was introduced to Ndombolo dance at an early age. In Uganda, it is known as Lingala. My uncle, Jachan Santo, was very good at Ndombolo and he got me interested in learning the dance moves, from videos we watched.
