Create a rustic look

You can use elements such as wood, stones and furniture to create a rustic look in your home.

What you need to know:

There is a wide range of things you can use to give your house an ancient look.

Are you looking for a new interior design for your home and are looking for new and more daring designs? Try giving your home a rustic look.

This concept makes the outdoors and indoors reflect a country laid back look. The key idea in this form of design is to give your home a rugged look that blends with nature.

David Walker Businge, a designer with Landscape and Interior Designing, says your living room interior should enhance your leisure time by being both practical and comfortable. He points out that lighting is probably the biggest design element in giving a house a rustic look.

Lighting
Businge explains, “Your lighting design ideas and choices are a fundamental part in making your home charismatic and warm. There are so many types of fittings available such as pendants, desk lights, spot lights, down lights, table lamps, wall chandeliers, floor lamps and strip lights. He adds, “However, your lighting ideas should be balanced out between artificial and natural light in order to achieve a good look for a rustic look into your house.”

Wood
Businge says wood is another of the many materials that will give your home the desired rustic look.
He says you can attain this look by changing the floors of your home and putting wood on the floors. You can also put wood panels on the walls and create an outdoor feel.

Loryn Mbabazi, an interior designer, says you should avoid sleek, smooth paneling styles that provide a modern look. Instead, opt for styles that have a rough texture that provides a rugged, unfinished look. She adds that you can leave the paneling with its natural colour or apply a stain to deepen its look.

Stones
Mbabazi says these can be used on the walls to create a rustic look within your house. If you want this look you can use natural stones.

Bricks
Augustine Mpanga, a builder, says an exposed brick wall can add a rustic charm to a room. This is available in a variety of colours, sizes and textures, so it is easy to find a style that compliments the rest of your decor.
He explains, “If you want the look of a brick interior, you can use brick veneer to cover your wall. Brick veneer is laid similarly to tiles. A mortar is spread on the wall and the bricks are set into place of the mortar. Plastic spacers separate the bricks during the drying process to create even spacing between them.

Faux finish
With the right painting techniques, you can give your walls a rustic look. Faux finishes allow you to add texture and dimension to your walls that make them appear rough and aged. For an easy rustic look, start with a dark base coat; use a sponge to apply a lighter glaze on top to create a porous, faded effect. If you prefer a more sticking look, use a patina faux finish to make your walls look like rusted metal.

You can re-create the look of rusted copper by covering your wall with a green base coat and sponging a copper metallic glaze on top. For a truly antiqued look, layer dark brown glaze shade over the copper.

Furniture
You can use rustic furniture to complete the rustic feel in your home. Rustic furniture can be handcrafted from authentic material. True rustic furniture is heavier, stronger and more rugged than the normal furniture. Rustic furniture embodies the natural look of real wood. Therefore, if you want to attain an ancient look in your home, you just have to implement any of these elements.
