What you need to know:

  • The standard of living of the people in the area is good and the health services fair.
  • There is a piped water system in the area. For those without piped water in their homes, a 20-litre jerrycan goes for Shs200.

The name Kitebi is related to the history of Buganda. Being Kabaka’s land, the place is believed to have housed Kabaka Mutebi’s palace hence the name Kitebi (meaning the place of Mutebi).
The small, secure and peaceful village with good access roads is located in Rubaga South constituency in Rubaga Division. It is surrounded by Mutundwe, Wankulukuku, Nyanama and Bunnamwaya villages.

It is about 10 kilometres away from Kampala City centre. A taxi ride will cost you Shs1,500 but if you are in a hurry, a boda boda ride will cost Shs3,000.

Economy
According to Mr Eric Jjemba Kabi, the LC1 chairman of Kitebi village, most of the residents work from the city centre and there is remarkable economic growth which has seen the development of two privately-owned markets. These are located at Star forward and next to Kitebi Secondary School.
The area has one primary and secondary government-aided schools. It also has two private secondary schools and eight kindergarten and primary schools.

Health services
The standard of living of the people in the area is good and the health services fair. “This is because in the same area is Kitebi Health Centre, where residents get quick and free medical services. For referrals, patients are sent to the nearby Rubaga Hospital, says Mr Jjemba. There are also a number of dispensaries and clinics in the area that are easily accessible to residents.”

Land and housing
Renting a single room in Kitebi will cost you between Shs100,000 and Shs150,000. A four-bed room house costs between Shs600,000 and Shs800, 000.
There are more rental houses than residential houses in the area according to Mr Jjemba.

Buying a plot of land depends on the size of the plot, situation of the seller and where the land is located.
For places near the road, the price goes a little higher to about Shs30m.
However, in Military Zone, the smallest in the area, it is very expensive to get a piece of land there. Land here goes for between Shs30 to Shs50m for a 50x50 feet plot.

Water and electricity
There is a piped water system in the area. For those without piped water in their homes, a 20-litre jerrycan goes for Shs200. There are also two spring water sources (wells) that supply water throughout the year. Electricity supply has been constant although a few people have bought solar panels.
