What to consider while designing your kitchen

A kitchen is one of the most precious places in a home since it is where most of the family meals are prepared. It is, therefore, important for it to be well designed.
Having a good kitchen is every home owners dream, and avoiding the common mistakes of kitchen design as discussed below, will turn this dream into reality.kit

Kitchen layout plan
Have the kitchen layout on paper to avoid putting things like the sink, stove and kitchen island, in the wrong positions. The best solution is to hire an architect who will ensure that all the activity area of the kitchen is well planned not obstructed.

Error on measurements
When you decide to design the kitchen yourself, do not get overconfident about the measurements. Inaccurate measurements of kitchen items like the fridge, cooker, are a major drawback and will cost you a lot of money to fix the mistakes.
It is therefore very important that you familiarise yourself with the sizes of the appliances and fixtures, so you can judge the space you will be left with once all are installed.

Wrong choice of materials
The wrong selection of material is a big mistake. For example when purchasing counter top material, do not forget durability and maintenance, and also keep in mind that, granite needs less maintenance than a laminated counter top.

Lighting
Kitchens generally require a lot of light, so plan to have as much natural light as possible and also artificial lighting should be enough for each kitchen activity, say cooking or washing utensils.

Ventilation
Proper ventilation is necessary to remove the odour and heat generated by the appliances in the kitchen. Therefore, improved indoor air quality is an important aspect of the kitchen design.
It is also important to know that most appliances like fridges and microwaves also need ventilation and they should therefore not be placed close to the walls.

Island
Islands are a very exciting feature of the kitchen, but a poorly planned kitchen island can be a nightmare.
For example, an island that is too large compared to the room will choke up space and affect the free movement, for the kitchen activities to be carried out smoothly.

Storage
Ensure that you have enough cabinet space for storing different kitchen based items, like cutlery, appliances, spices and so on. And keep in mind their dimensions.
At the end of the day, remember that the kitchen is a big part of the home and therefore any bad plan will always stare at you in the face.
