The National Council for Higher Education (NHCE) has declared the Ntinda/Nakawa-based Stawa University legal and free to operate.

In a notice issued on May 8, NCHE says the university satisfied the requirements for operation.

"I have pleasure to inform you that at its 35th meeting of May 30, council resolved that STAWA university project be granted a letter of interim authority," the notice issued by the deputy executive director, Rev Canon Dr Alex Mugisha Kaguma said.

Stawa was declared illegal in December 2012 after NCHE claimed that the university was established without a provisional license charter as required by section 118(1) of the Universities and other Tertiary Institutions Act of 2001.

The Ntinda based university has also appointed a Jamaican professor, Dr Sandra Hamilton as new vice chancellor.
