Bududa landslides: Police block opposition leaders from delivering relief items to victims

Police in Bududa District on Sunday blocked a team of opposition leaders from delivering relief items to the landslide victims in Bukalasi Parish, Bubiita Sub County. The police argued that relief items should be delivered to the district headquarters not directly to victims.

The Bududa District Police Commander Ms Esther Adeke said they decided to block these opposition leaders after they refused to follow the guidelines given to them.

"The district disaster committee and the security committee decided that everyone who brings relief aid should deliver it to the district and the authorities here will take the responsibility to distribute it," Ms Adeke said adding that: “We have allowed them to visit the victims in Bukalasi but if they don’t want to deliver the items to the district, they should take it back.”
Earlier, the Bududa District Chairperson who also acts as disaster committee chairperson, Mr Wilson Watila, said they will not allow any body to use the relief for politics.

"If anyone is to bring the relief aid, it must be delivered through the district disaster committee and will be given the receipt showing the items delivered. This will help us in proper accountability," he said.

The team of opposition leaders comprised of FDC President Patric Amuriat, LoP Betty Aol Ochan and Kawempe South MP Mubarak Munyagwa among others.
