Lands minister Daudi Migereko has decried the rate at which government and religious institutions’ land is being encroached on, owing the practice to greed.

Mr Migereko said unlike in the past when people feared public land, today they are fearless, adding that lack of vigilance has made their schemes easy to implement.

“In the past, people used to fear government and church property. They used to fear invading church land but today, there is a breed of fearless greedy individuals who can grab anything. If these lands for schools, churches, hospitals and other government entities are not surveyed, there is a problem,” Mr Migereko said.

The minister made the remarks while speaking at the thanksgiving service for Ntungamo Woman MP Naome Kabasharira at Rukoni Archdeaconry Church of Uganda in Rukoni Sub-county, Ntungamo on Sunday. Ms Kabasharia was celebrating three years in Parliament.

Mr Migereko said while the issuance of land titles has been costly and the process lengthy, computersation of land titles and setting up of regional offices will make the process easy and fraud-proof.

Ms Kabasharira asked church leaders to effectively use the land at their disposal to earn income so that they stop begging and depending on offertory. She said unused land is susceptible to encroachment which may not even be reversed since the demarcations are not always clear.
