House of Bishops calls off vote on new Soroti Bishop

  • Earlier in March 2018, after the synod sat, the delegates from across the Dioceses who constitute the Nomination Committee sat and nominated two names, Rev Canon John Robert Angiro and Rev Robert Olupot, the Diocesan Secretary to be sent to the house of Bishop.

The much anticipated election for the new Bishop for Soroti Anglican Diocese has been postpone until further notice over delayed submission of the elected nominees from Soroti Diocese for the position of Bishop.
Talking to Daily Monitor on Phone from the house of Bishops that had a two-day retreat in Kampala, Bishop Edison Iregei, the Dean of Province of Bishops Church of Uganda, said that the names for the elected nominees by the Nomination Committee (NC) had not been handed to the Archbishop until May 29.
“The names were handed over on Tuesday, shortly after Archbishop Stanley Ntagali just jetted in from China for the house of Bishop Retreat,” he confirmed.

Bishop Edison Iregei said the voting was halted until further notice but didn’t mention of the possibility of the election being called off because of petitions from some dissatisfied candidates who had expressed interest to replace the outgoing Bishop for Soroti Diocese George William Erwau.

“For now, I call upon Christians to be calm,” he said.
The outgoing Bishop George William Erwau, when contacted over the said delayed submission of the nominated names to replace him by the Nomination Committee of Soroti Diocese, said everything will be communicated by the Archbishop Stanley Ntagali soon.
“I have no mandate. That is the work of Archbishop and the provincial chancellor,” he explained.

Mr Erwau appealed to Christians to remain calm and wait for what the house of Bishops will come up with.
