Kirumira killing: 10 witnesses, suspects record statements

Kampala. Police officers investigating the September 8 killing of former Buyende District Police Commander, Muhammad Kirumira, have reportedly recorded statements from 10 eyewitnesses and nine suspects in the last three weeks.
Sources at Kampala Central Police Station said the 10 eye witnesses had either been summoned or picked up to record statements.
A joint team comprising personnel from the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI), Internal Security Organisation (ISO) and Criminal Intelligence and Investigations Department (CIID) has for the last three weeks been piecing together information to establish the killers of Kirumira who was known for openly accusing his seniors of hobnobbing with criminals.

The probe
A senior police officer said two of the latest eyewitnesses were picked up on Tuesday and taken to CMI to record statements but were later driven back to their homes.
“Many eyewitnesses had been confidants, who Kirumira had talked to about threats on his life. Kirumira had also reportedly named some of the people he claimed were trailing him,” the source said.
Sources said the investigators have since arrested nine of the 13 suspects named by the eyewitnesses.
A total of six investigators have reportedly been sent to track down the suspects, most of them working with the police’s Flying Squad Unit (FSU), or had been dropped during the unit’s recent screening ordered by Inspector General of Police Martin Okoth Ochola in May.
The CIID spokesperson, Mr Vincent Ssekate, declined to comment on the developments but referred Saturday Monitor to Kampala Metropolitan CID commander Johnson Olal and Kampala police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire.
But Mr Owoyesigyire referred this newspaper to police spokesperson Emilian Kayima, who did not pick up nor return our repeated calls.
But a senior police officer, who previously worked with the deceased at Old Kampala Police Station, is among the suspects in custody.
Sources also say the suspects who had been held at CMI headquarters in Mbuya in Kampalawere on Wednesday transferred to Makindye Military Barracks in Kampala.
