Kyotera Woman MP cries out to Museveni over unfulfilled pledges

The Kyotera District Woman MP, Ms Robinah Ssentongo, has castigated President Museveni for failing to fulfil a pledge he made to earthquake victims in the district two years ago.
The MP wondered why the President is currently splashing cash donations to people in Kampala yet there are outstanding pledges he had made to vulnerable people in the countryside.
Museveni money
In the past weeks, Mr Museveni has donated cash to various youth groups in Kampala and State House has since said the money is meant to empower the poor youth to improve their livelihoods.
“It was very clear that all the items Mr Museveni pledged were needed urgently to enable earthquake victims reconstruct their houses, but nothing has been done to date. It is really disappointing that the Head of State can make a pledge and it remains unfilled for years,” Ms Ssentongo told Daily Monitor in a telephone interview yesterday.
On September 10, 2016, a high magnitude earthquake shook most parts of Uganda and destroyed more than 500 houses in Kakuuto and Kyebe sub-counties in Kyotera District and another 3,186 houses developed cracks.
In the aftermath of the earthquake, President Museveni visited the affected villages in the district and promised that government would give iron sheets, cement and iron bars to the victims to enable them reconstruct their houses.
The President said each household was to receive at least 30 iron sheets, cement and iron bars. Mr Museveni noted that most of the houses that were destroyed by the 5.7 magnitude earthquake were poorly constructed and needed to be rebuilt properly using iron bars.
However, the President did not give a time frame when the building materials would be delivered to the victims.
Despite the Minister for Presidency, Ms Esther Mbayo bringing the issue to the attention of the President during Independence Day celebrations at Kasasa Grounds, Kyotera Town Council on Tuesday, the President, in his speech, did not address it.
Mr Don Wanyama, the senior presidential press secretary, said the President is committed to fulfill all the outstanding pledges he made to the people of Kyotera.
