Police in Mayuge District are holding a 20-year-old man for allegedly defiling four girls.

Mayuge DPC, Diana Namutunzi, said Norman Ntambi, a resident of Bukizibu Village in Malongo Sub-county in Mayuge District, is said to have defiled three girls aged between 10 and 11 years after buying each of them popcorns of Shs200, while the fourth girl aged 14, had been married by the suspect.

Ms Namutunzi said the suspect will be charged with aggravated defilement as police hunt for the parents of the girl whom he had married.

Defilement and child marriages are growing vices in Uganda which are believed to be driven by poverty, limited access to education for girls and ignorance on risks associated with marrying girls at an early age.
