Barely two years after a social worker was shot and died in hospital for allegedly scratching another motorist’s car, a man in Nansana, has survived being killed over a similar incident.
Gerald Kayondo was on Monday morning saved by police officers from an angry mob in Nansana, Wakiso District after allegedly hitting a taxi driver with a hoe on the head.
Police say a scuffle ensued between Kayondo who was driving a Prado registration number UAM 617 D and the taxi driver one Richard Seruga following a car scratch.

“The scuffle allegedly ensued after the taxi driver accidentally scratched the parked Prado. The two drivers are said to have first engaged in a verbal exchange and I think things got out hand before the Prado guy opened his car, pulled out a hoe and hit the taxi driver on the head,” Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, Mr Luke Owoyegyire told our reporter.

He said Seruga was rushed to a nearby clinic in critical condition.
However, angry residents and taxi operators pounced on Kayondo and started beating him before setting fire onto his car.
“He was however saved by our officers who arrested him. He is currently detained at Nansana Police station. He will be charged with causing grievous harm when investigations are complete,” Mr Owoyesigyire said.

There were allegations on social media that the Prado driver was an army officer, which the army spokesperson, Brig Richard Karemire dismissed as false.

“No UPDF personnel or vehicle got involved in an accident in Nansana this morning as is circulating on social media. M/V Land Cruizer UAM 617D driven by civilian Gerard Kayondo is the one that was involved. Details are with Police,” Brig Karemire tweeted.
