Mourners demand justice for traffic officer killed on duty

KAPCHORWA-The police officer, who was knocked dead by a bus belonging to Devine Bus Company while on duty on Kabakanjagala-Nabunya junction on Rubaga Road, Kampala, on Friday, has been laid to rest.
Cpl Wilfred Tweituk, a traffic officer attached to Old Kampala Station, was buried at his ancestral home in Kisitya Cell, Siron Ward in Kapchorwa Municipality yesterday.
Hundreds of mourners, including the Kampala Metropolitan traffic commander, Mr Norman Musinga, flocked the deceased’s ancestral home for the burial. Speakers described the officer as too disciplined.
Mr Alfred Tweituk, a leader of Kapchesokwo, the deceased’s clan, described him as a hardworking and disciplined son and that it was painful to lose him at a tender age.
“We regret that our son died under such circumstances and we call upon police to act on the reckless driver,” he said.
Mr Stephen Chemayek, an elder brother to the deceased officer, descirbed him as a down to earth person.
AIGP Stephen Kasiima, the police traffic director, in his speech read by Mr Musinga, said this was a unique accident in the history of his career.
“Since I joined the Uganda Police Force, I have never seen such a scenario like what occurred to the deceased. It was very tragic,” Mr Musinga said.
Disciplined
Mr Kasiima also praised Tweituk for being a disciplined and a trusted officer who died at a time when the Force was undergoing and image transition.
“We don’t know whether the driver did it intentionally or not. Investigations continue and we shall try to verify and find out the motive of the driver,” he said.
Mr Musinga assured the mourners that that the culprit would be arrested and charged.
“We are aggrieved as a family of the Uganda Police Force. Those of you who saw that incident, the way the bus knocked our friend; it was beyond our own understanding,” he said, adding that all procedures and statements from eye witness were taken.
Lost an experienced person
Mr Anthony Nkesiga, the Old Kampala officer in charge of traffic, said as police, they had lost an experienced officer.
Political, religious and cultural leaders attended the burial.
The late officer joined police in 1991 and has worked in several stations in Karamoja, Busoga sub-regiuons and Kampala.
