Police save suspected cannibals from lynching

Three residents of Kibooro, Burungu and Nyakaina villages in Kabarole District survived lynching on Monday over suspicion that they were cannibals.
The locals, who were also accused of practicing witchcraft, were only saved from near death by the police.
According to Mr Richard Kapere, the officer in-charge of Kasusu Police Post in Fort Portal Municipality, the suspects were detained at the station, pending court appearance.
“Other three suspects fled the area when angry residents stormed their homes with intent to kill them,” Mr Kapere said.
The suspects were arrested on Monday afternoon during a police operation, which followed several complaints that acts of witchcraft were high in the district.
During the operation, security officials discovered parts of human bodies, local herbs, small pots and horns in one of the suspect’s shrines.
The discoveries, suspected to have been used for witchcraft, were impounded and kept at the police station to be used as exhibits.
