Bweyogerere High defends boxing trophy

KAMPALA. Bweyogerere High School made a loud statement as the undisputed champions of schools boxing when they retained the National Schools Championship trophy Saturday night.
At this year’s edition, Bweyogerere scored 38 points to defend the crown they won last year. Kololo High, one of the traditional boxing schools, came second with 33 points.
Coach Hebert Kalungi lauded his stars, especially Vincent Mubiru, for a spirited performance that fetched them valuable points.
Kampala High School, who gave Bweyogerere a hard time last year, finished a distant fifth with only five points which coach Davis Lusimbo blamed on inadequate preparation.
“We didn’t prepare for this tournament, we were informed on short notice, but next time better,” said Lusimbo, a 1994 Olympian.
But youngster Kalungi, a former national youth boxer, who suspended his career to train slum youths had answers to Lusimbo woes.
“Yes we all were summoned on short notice, but my boys are always training and are ready for action. That’s how we do it," he said.
