Mbarara. There were curious similarities between the two finalists, Craish Mayengo and Andrew Aseka, in the Nile Special Pool Open regional qualifier at Nico’s Pub- Mbarara’s, on Friday Night. Prior to their qualification, they had both twice played at the grand finale, they had both last qualified in 2013 and both skipped last year’s tournament.
These similarities seemed to have spilled into their duel before Mayengo finally overcame Aseka 4-2. The first two games came off like an exchange of pleasantries. Poised to take the first of the best of seven final, Mayengo potted the black and sank the white ball too handing the initiative to Aseka.
Not to be outdone in this charity affair, Aseka immediately returned the favour. Having potted all his balls, some in angles that required a laser guide to be shot, Aseka was left with the black; the simplest of them all, or so it seemed. He hit it with the same poise but not accuracy; grazing both edges of the pot but staying out.
Mayengo received the gift with glee and with it claimed the next two games. Aseka took the fifth game but his attempts of a comeback fell short of the mark.
