Musoke targets bright start with women’s team

Allan Musoke, believes winning the Elgon Cup this year can be the beginning of a success story

KAMPALA. The Lady Rugby Cranes have not enjoyed good results of late but their newly-appointed coach, Allan Musoke, believes winning the Elgon Cup this year can be the beginning of a success story.
“My first task is getting the girls in shape to win the Elgon Cup in June,” Musoke said recently. “It’s going to be tough because it is a whole young team. Many of the experienced players are way past their prime. As a blessing, we have fitter, younger players coming through,” he added. The Lady Rugby Cranes last won the Elgon Cup against Kenya two years ago.

Former Cranes and Kobs wing Musoke also hopes to add another U-19 Safari 7s title after helping the national junior side win the event last year.
One of his long term goals is to groom players that will qualify for the Rugby Women’s World Cup in 2017 (7s) and 2019 (15s). “With this young crop of players, I think this (World Cup) is achievable,” he noted. Putting together a side to train consistently ahead of the Elgon Cup in June, has however, been a challenge for Musoke.
“Some of promising players reside in distant places like Mbale, Jinja, Entebbe, Gulu and Kitgum. This means that I cannot fully utilize my training days during the week. However, I will maximize the weekends,” Musoke said.
