Kizza leads Villa title charge as Express get lifeline in Uganda Premier League
KAMPALA.
The Azam Uganda Premier League (AUPL) title race is largely a three-horse race with SC Villa holding a six-point gap over second and third-placed KCCA and Vipers following yesterday’s games.
The reigning champions KCCA can however trim that lead back to three if they win their game again Maroons this evening.
Allan Okello appears to be shouldering responsibility for KCCA lately while Daniel Sserunkuma and Milton Karisa’s goals have Vipers not too far behind as they seek this season’s title.
But if Villa is to end their 14 year wait for a league drought, Martin Kizza seems the player who is most likely to deliver the Holy Grail.
Decisive goals
The left footed winger scored his sixth league goal in as many games as Villa recorded another 1-0 win, this time over Police at their Masaka Recreation Ground fortress yesterday.
Like against URA, in a victory that started what is now a six-match unbeaten run, Kizza scored with a long range effort to separate the two teams.
He is now third on the goal scorers’ charts but with all his nine goals thus far being decisive either as winners or breaking the deadlock to help the club accumulate 19 points.
Yesterday’s result moved Villa to a league best 49 points after 23 games, with KCCA and Vipers a further six points behind after the latter were frustrated to a goalless draw away to Bul.
At the bottom end of the table, six-time league winners Express benefited most from two relegation six pointers, edging wasteful Mbarara 1-0 at Wankulukuku courtesy of substitute David Ndihabwe’s volley.
Relegation scuffle
The result which included a missed penalty from their substitute Joseph Ssemujju, allowed Express to move within one point of their day’s opponents and two clear of Proline and Masavu the only teams just below them on 20 points each. This is after the two teams played out a 1-1 draw in Bugonga with Gift Ali’s goal cancelled out by Athur Ssemazi’s 82nd minute leveler.
