Chameleone made empty promises to Karamoja

A group of Karamojong elders from Rupa Sub County in Moroto district in Karamoja sub region want to meet musician Joseph Mayanja popularly known as Chameleon over claims he made empty promises to construct boreholes and pit latrines in the area.
The elders allege the singer went to shoot a video for his Wale wale song in Karamoja in July last year, and while there, he made the said promises but has since failed to honour them.

"Was he also sent by those who have made us their financial source?” Mze Peter Lokol asked.
He said they were even mobilized to go and witness the launch of the album at Kampala Serena Hotel where the first lady Janet Museveni was the chief guest and the theme of the launch was to raise money for constructing boreholes in Karamoja but nothing has been done yet.
"Could it be that the gentleman sent the money but it landed into the hands of wrong people?” wondered Ms Joice Angolere who offered her house as changing room for Chameleone’s dancing crew during the video shoot.

Mathew Lokwang another elder called for investigations into the matter saying the singer could have sent the money but some “vultures” swindled it. Adding that, any person soliciting money for his personal gain using Karimojong will one day pay.
"Some time back we were again told there was a television soliciting money using the Karamojong pictures in Kampala claim to be fundraising for us but nothing came out of it,” he said.
The elders have also vowed never to be photographed by the people they don't know saying those are the ones selling their photos for their personal gains.

The district leaders have also declined to comment on the issues, however' the effort to get a comment from Chameleon were futile as he was reported to be out of the county.
BACKGROUND
Jose Chameleone while at a conference for the Association of Certified Chartered Accountants (ACCA) in Eastern Africa at Speke resort Munyonyo in December last year committed to the Karamoja borehole project while on stage.

“I am Ugandan and proud, so I take this opportunity to invite you all for my concert next month whose proceeds will aid the construction of boreholes and pit latrines in Karamoja region,” the singer said before he burst into his wale wale song that left suited accountants singing and dancing along.
In reply to Chameloene’s invite to be chief guest at the one million concert, First lady and Minister for Karamoja affiars Ms Janet Museveni also hinted that her decision to accept invitation was because the concert was themed at improving the lives of the people of Karamoja.

“I would also like to inform you that she ( Janet Museveni) has accepted to be present at this concert which is in part intended to raise support for the improvement of people’s lives in Karamoja,” Ms Museveni office wrote on December 1.
During the concert on 18th December 2014, that attracted among others; Prince David Wasajja, Charles Mbiire, Andrew Kaweesi, and a number of other musicians and Kampala’s socialites, The First Lady hailed Chameleon for espousing a beautiful spirit of caring for other people.

“This is not a normal practice for the young people in today’s world who usually only think about themselves and their needs”, she observed.
She also saluted all the patrons who attended the concert for partnering with Chameleon to give a gift to the people of Karamoja. “This is indeed a beautiful Christmas gift even for me”, she added.
Jose Chameleone on his part said he was inspired to fundraise for safe water in Karamoja after seeing the works that Ms Museveni had done to transform the region.
