Last Thursday, three Daily Monitor journalists were awarded at the fifth edition of the Uganda Press Photo Award (UPPA) competition. The event was held at the Uganda Museum where the winners’ exhibition was unveiled.
The photojournalists are Abubaker Lubowa, Dominic Bukenya and Colleb Mugume.

Lubowa won the best photo in the story category. He submitted photos of the confrontation between Besigye, his supporters and the police during the election campaign period. Bukenya emerged second in the news photo category. His award winning photo was of Pope Francis looking closely at the sculptures during his visit at Namugongo Martyrs Shrine late last year. Mugume won third place in the best news photo category and his picture was of Besigye’s procession in Mbarara Town towards Election Day.

Their images were selected from a shortlist of 24 finalists across seven categories, namely: News, Daily Life, Portrait, Creative, Sport, Nature and story and an overall winner of the competition – the photo of the year.

Anna Kucma, the UPPA director, says the awards were established to support and help photojournalism grow as a profession.
“We wanted to give photojournalists a platform to showcase their work in a form of an exhibition,” Kucma says, adding, “Throughout the years, we also started including other things such as workshops, film screenings, and portfolio reviews aimed at helping them grow.”
