Transport has been paralysed following the collapse of a bridge that connects Wante village, Imanyiro Sub-county in Mayuge District to Busu village in Iganga District.
The bridge reportedly collapsed when its culverts were washed away by heavy rains.
It is not clear when it collapsed; however, when this reporter visited the area on Monday morning, residents and travelers were found stranded on either side of the road.
Mr Jamil Magumba, the LC1 chairperson Wante village, said Primary Seven candidates who were walking from Busu to Wante Primary School to sit for their Primary Leaving Examinations [PLE] were among those affected.

“About 20 Primary Seven candidates, who were heading to Wante to sit for their final exams, were stranded as they could not cross; so we had to carry them on our shoulders,” said Mr Magumba.
Mr Wanza Mwamadi, a resident, said as a result of the damaged road, transport fares have been hiked as boda boda cyclists have to meander through several roads to reach Iganga town.

Residents say health facilities have become hard to be accessed and have appealed to concerned authorities to intervene. This publication has learnt that the road is under the supervision of Mayuge district local government.
However, efforts to get a comment from the district LC5 chairman, Mr Omar Bongo, were futile as he did not answer or return our repeated calls.
