What you need to know:

  • Kagulu Hill is believed to have been the first settlement of Busoga royals, Omukama Namatukula and his wife, Nawudo after crossing Lake Kyoga from Bunyoro in the early 17th Century. The rock which rises 3,600 feet above sea level, has the cultural significance of being a coronation site for Busoga kings.

Foreign legislators, Parliament staff and decision-makers on Sunday jetted into the country for the 64th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC) at Munyonyo, a Kampala suburb.

Though the conference will climax with a General Assembly later in the week, the delegates on Wednesday visited the Source of the Nile and Kagulu Hill in Jinja and Buyende districts, respectively.

“If a small group of Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) delegates left Shs18m, what will about 300 CPC delegates bring to the sub-region? I expect at least Shs100m from these delegates,” Ms Kadaga said.

Earlier, Buyende Woman MP Veronica Kadogo said when IGAD delegates visited Kagulu Hill in April 2018, they left behind more than Shs18m after buying out all local souvenirs. Ms Kadaga said the delegates, while in Busoga, will get a feel of the terrain, weather, lifestyle, facilities and what affects the residents among others, all in line with the thematic areas for discussion.

“The visit would showcase our best hospitality, culture, values, ancestry, heritage, and define who we are as we market ourselves, cash in and improve residents’ livelihoods,” Ms Kadaga said.

Publicity move
The chairman of Uganda Tourism Board [UTB], Mr Daudi Migereko, said: “The immediate benefit is the publicity we get from the tourism sites that are going to be visited. Anybody who didn’t know that there was something attractive in this part of the world will now know.”

A visit to the Source of the Nile yesterday found works reminiscent of those undertaken in Kampala ahead of Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in 2007 going on, with workers sweeping the road sideways while trucks loaded with asphalt stood guard.
