MOROTO. The High Court in Soroti has summoned China Railway No3 Engineering Group Co. Ltd, a company upgrading Moroto-Soroti road, over allegations of failing to compensate owners of land containing a stone quarry.
The court deputy registrar, Ms Jullia Achiyo, on November 1 asked the company to file its defence within 15 days, failure of which judgment will be delivered in their absence.

The residents led by Lokwi Apachoic allege that the construction company displaced many families from their land in Lomunit Village, Nadunget Sub-county in Moroto District without compensating them, and threatened to kill any residents who attempts to disrupt their work when blasting a rock.

Fertile land
The affected families are seeking compensation from the company for the damages, arguing that the excavation is taking place on their only available fertile land where they used to cultivate and graze their cattle.
Mr Xinglu Wang, the company’s project coordinator, acknowledged receipt the court summons but declined to give details.
