Kampala. Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga launched, on Friday night, an initiative meant to improve the quality of education in Busoga Sub-region. The function took place at a hotel in Kololo, Kampala.

The Busoga Education Initiative aims at mobilising resources to facilitate teaching and learning and improve facilities in schools, fight teenage pregnancies and reduce school dropout rate, among other things.
“Back in the day, Busoga Sub-region had a fairly better quality of education compared to other regions. This has, however, changed over the years. Today, it is evident that the quality of education in Busoga has gone down. Busoga Education Initiative is meant to help uplift the standards of education in the region,” Ms Kadaga said at the function that ended after 11pm.

The function was also attended by Ms Rosemary Seninde, the state minister for Primary Education, Prof Waswa Balunywa, the Principal of Makerere University Business School, Dr Joseph Muvawala, the prime minister of Busoga Kingdom, and former Lands minister Daudi Migereko, among others.

Ms Agnes Kadama Kalibbala, the Busoga Education Initiative chairperson, attributed what she called poor education standards in Busoga Sub-region to “a poor mind-set towards education, extremely poor learning environment and high rates of teacher and learner absenteeism”.

Ms Kadama attributed the idea of establishing the education initiative to Ms Seninde, who in turn said that she conceived the idea after analysing the performance of Busoga schools.
Some of the individuals present contributed money to support the initiative.
